These types of large brooches/pins were used to secure a sash during the late 1800s early 1900s when the fad of wearing sash over the shoulder and across the chest imitated Queen Victoria. Many brooches of this caliber have very thick pins for holding several layers of fabric. They resemble large buckles and are closed with a C-Clasp closure which is reminiscing of that time.
