Two cousins named John Boyles and Dick Faber opened Mr. Fables in 1963. Boyles purchased a Kewpee location from his father. The Kewpee restaurant was founded in 1929. The cousins combined the names Boyles and Faber to form Fables.
There were 17 locations at the company's height. However, it filed for bankruptcy after fierce competition from national chains. The last location closed at the turn of the 21st century.
