The Horological Institute of America was organized with the cooperation of the National Research
Council.
As one of its functions the Institute grants certificates of proficiency to candidates who pass its
examinations. The certificates must be obtained in the following order:
1. JUNIOR. WATCHMAKER (lowest grade), capable of doing simple watch repairing and cleaning.
2. CERTIFIED WATCHMAKER, capable of doing expert watch repairing.
3. CERTIFIED HOROLOGIST (an exceptionally high grade), capable of doing any kind of high grade watch, clock, and chronometer designing, construct-ing, and repairing.
