When Pat painted this image in 1982, she wished to depict the hustle and bustle of New York City under the protective flame of Liberty. The airplane, bearing the American Airlines symbol and flying in front of the Twin Towers is her symbol for the comings and goings in America's busy city. Pat first painted the word Bowing (for Boeing) on the plane, and that is how it appears in the New York poster. She changed the name from Boeing (the manufacturer) to American Airlines (the airline) when she published the print version in 1996. In spite of the eerie coincidence of art and life, Pat has chosen to release the plate and ornament in this form because to her the painting now reflects the indomitable spirit of New York City and all Americans
