Mariage Freres, which also has its flagship store in the Ginza 5-chome area of Tokyo, Japan, and a retail store with a cafe in Shinjuku 3-chome, is a famous French specialty tea store. Its history dates back to the late 17th century when the Mariage family in France began importing rare food items from around the world and eventually specialized in tea trade. In 1854, the Mariage Freres company was established, aiming to supply the world with the finest teas. Over 100 years later, in 1983, Richard Bueno from the Netherlands and Kitty Cha Sagman from Thailand decided to breathe new life into the world of tea. Frank Desan joined them in 1987, pioneering a whole new approach to tea known today as French Tea. They paved the way for many things that are now considered common in the world of tea enthusiasts, such as the sale of the highest quality teas including green and white teas gathered from all corners of the earth. They also developed the entire vocabulary associated with tea worldwide and introduced tea-based cuisine and innovative tea services. This book narrates the fascinating story of Mariage Freres, a company that has become famous on every continent, and the true revolution it sparked in the world of tea.
