This white glazed porcelain figurine is a depiction of Mary as a young Madonna. She is shown holding the child Jesus in her arm as he stands on an open book laid across her lap. A tiny bird is perched on the left side of the book. The Madonna and Child appear to be contemplating a tiny flower which the Madonna holds in her left hand. Mary's hair falls loosely over her regal cloak richly embossed with floral pattern of small, evenly spaced raised dots. Child Jesus is dressed in a little tunic.
The original drawing of Maria Innocentia Hummel was first sculpted by master sculptor Reinhold Unger in 1935. Then, in 1956, the mold was renewed by Theo A. Mezenbach and made approximately 2 inches smaller. The halo was changed at that time from the open style to the flat style. It has been produced in white over glaze, pastel blue cloak, brown cloak, ivory cloak and pastel yellow cloak.
