Vintage Print 1960's Sir Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) 23H x 17w x 1d

The Blue Boy was painted by Thomas Gainsborough in 1770. The boy in the painting was not a royal, as some guess, but actually a boy named Jonathan Buttall. He was the son of a hardware merchant who was friends with Gainsborough.

The style worn in the painting was in homage to Sir Anthony Van Dyck, from the early 17th century. Gainsborough was not only one of the greatest portrait painters of the 18th Century, but he demonstrated his talent at an early age. His fame grew rapidly. All prominent men of the time were his subjects and he was a favorite of England's Royal Family. The famous portrait Blue Boy hangs in the Huntington museum in CA. It reveals the lifelike qualities and masterful handling of colors so typical of all of his work. Other Gainsborough paintings are in galleries throughout the world. Gainsborough was one of the original 36 members of London's Royal Academy in 1768.
