A. Santini Vintage Hercules and Lichas Statue in Bonded Marble and Resin
Deianeira - Hercules's wife - in her attempts to restore the faded love of her husband, sent Lichas to Hercules with a gift: a beautiful tunic treated with blood of centaur Nessus which allegedly had the magic power to restore love. She did not realize that the blood was poisoned, and she actually sent her husband a death sentence. When Hercules took on the tunic, he felt unbearable pain caused by poisonous blood penetrating the skin. He called Lichas to find out who gave him the tunic. When Lichas came, Hercules, being out of his mind due to enormous pain, grabbed innocent Lichas by foot and swung him over the cliff. The original sculpture was created by Antonio Canova (1757-1822), a neo-classicist who turned his eyes to ancient Greece and there sought his inspiration.
