Bleach follows Ichigo Kurosaki, a 15-year-old, who can see ghosts. When a vengeful spirit attacks his family, Ichigo becomes a Soul Reaper, a samurai-like figure who sends spirits to the afterlife. He gains his powers by accident from Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper who must recuperate. Ichigo must then fight Hollows, evil spirits that prey on the unsuspecting.
This supernatural shonen series was serialized in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump from Aug. 2001 to Aug. 2016.
In North America, the manga was licensed for English release by Viz Media in 2004. They have released the collected volumes and published its chapters in their Shonen Jump magazine from November 2007 until the magazine's final issue in April 2012.
