Here is a small vintage doll with big charm. Made in 1950's post-WWII Japan, this apprentice geisha has had a long journey over her nearly 70 years. Brought to a Catholic mission in Alaska as a gift, the doll remained there until recently. Its original display case was destroyed.Rarely have I seen a small doll with such a charming smile and stance. In great shape for her age, although there is a bit of fading in some areas of her kimono.Her face is finished in gofun oyster shell gelatin and is in great condition. Her sparkling glass eyes finish the look. She stands at 9 high inside the case on a handprinted lacquer pedestal (not original). The case is not in flawless condition, but does the job of protecting the doll. The case is a combination of lacquered wood and plastic sculpted to look like wood.
