Set of two ceramic figures called ‘mudmen’.
Use them in your own plant-scape, or just as a display & décor. Based on the type of stamp underneath and the large opening in the bottom, the two standing figures are circa 1890 - 1920.
Condition: Fantastic! No defects to report, great shape.

Standing with black beard, necklace and scrolls 8”

Old figurines were made individually by hand. 'Mudmen' figures are made from mudbank clay, rather than refined porcelain clays with the faces and hands typically left unglazed, ie. the color of mud. The tradition of mudmen dates back a 1000 years to the practice of Pen'Jing, Chinese miniatures landscape created using bonsai trees and decor built in a tray or the like (from which the Japanese bonsai practice began.)
