At age 18 he was in an accident which resulted in paralysis of all four limbs. He began painting with his mouth and in 1987 received a scholarship from the AMFPA (Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists) of which he is now an associate member. Today, John lives in a small So. African village where the poverty that he saw and experienced in the region led him to establish a home for homeless children. At present, this home provides accommodation for 35 children.
