Kiyotaka Tsuriizaki, a corpse photographer and filmmaker, has been taking photographs of corpses in dangerous areas such as crime scenes and conflict zones around the world. The revised edition of the first fully natural color, unedited corpse photo book in Japan, THE DEAD (published in 2018), has finally been realized by the author, who continues to confront expressions regulated by taboos.
For 30 years, I have been photographing corpses. Throughout my journey in the world’s dangerous zones, I have engaged in the life-and-death challenge of wrestling with the ultimate subject, the corpse, with a sense of purpose and pride. At the same time, these thirty years have also been a daily battle for freedom of expression. The extreme representations of corpses have faced severe criticism since the early 1990s and have been restricted in the places where they can be presented. In recent years, the world has become increasingly sanitized, and it feels almost miraculous that I can still continue my work. The world is cruel. When I view the world and history with this premise, the traces of people who lived and died beautifully shine like a sky full of stars. I believe my job is to give a name to the nameless dead lying by the roadside.
